GYAKU (“Reverse”): Drop to other knee and torque his arms the other direction, usually would drop uke face down. JUJI (“Cross shape”): Instead one shoves uke's arms (from the grip underside his arms) upwards and then crosses them, then turn and drop to one knee.

膳砕   Tansai      Tray Crusher

'Tansai' really should be translated as “crushing at the table”, the word 'tan' refers to low tables used by the Japanese. Tori steps forward a little with the right foot to turn uke a bit, right kumade raking hand pushes and left kumade raking hand pulls (to slightly reposition uke's body. Tori body turning darts one leg around uke, and performs a hip throw. Uke would usually fall onto his back.

大小捌ノ型   Daisho Sabaki No Kata      Sword Manipulation Forms

Both uke and tori bear daisho slung (with or without the tanto.) It is important to remember that, in each kata, when the longsword is taken from uke, it is used in the submission ONLY when he is downed and on the ground. If uke is not downed, always the short sword is used to submit him (whether having stolen his or drawn one's own.) This is because the distance between uke and tori makes the long sword less viable (one is supposed to use short sword) when uke is standing (he is disadvantaged when down on the ground.) That being the case, some of the techniques take advantage of the wrong timing and distance in which the longsword was drawn or used, which presents the opportunity to steal uke's shortsword. By doing this uke is disarmed generally, his own sword(s) used against him (the distance being wrong for either man to use longsword.) The longsword is quite dangerous, usually it might not be used in these fashions, implying either a lack of knowledge and skill on uke's part, or some other circumstance impeeding his proper usage of long and short sword. The techniques of Daisho-sabaki are used also, perhaps in a slight modification of the technique, to perform weapons disarm such as Kojū-dori (小銃取) “Rifle/Musket Capture” in which case it can be called also kojū-sabaki-dori (小銃捌取) “Rifle/Musket Manipulating Capture”. These adaptations are much the same, they take advantage of the wrong distance at which the long gun has been employed. Sometimes Kojū-dori (小銃取) “Rifle/Musket Capture” is thought of as being these techniques performed when you yourself (tori) have no long gun, in which case kojū-sabaki-dori (小銃捌取) “Rifle/Musket Manipulating Capture” is practiced when both have long rifle (and perhaps also sidearm pistol). Kojū-dori can sometimes also be adaptations of the techniques of muto-dori for the same purpose. Sometimes the term Jūshin-dori (銃身取) is the term used instead, indicating that it is, of course, the barrel of the gun being manipulated and captured. Handling the barrel of a long gun compared to handling the blade of a sword, such movements as blocking the descent of the blade by strong arming, with long gun barrel it is to prevent the barrel from actually being turned on you (obvious as to why one might wish to prevent this.) The adaptations of the techniques go like that. The first Daisho-sabaki technique, tsuka kudaki ('hilt crusher'), is sometimes renamed jūshu kudaki henka (銃床砕変化) or “Gun Stock Crusher Variation” and etc. Similary, whereas both muto-dori and daisho sabaki will often use some variation of techniques such as tsuka gyakko “hilt reversing movement” such with a long gun instead is called jūshu gyakko (銃床逆行) “gun stock reversing movement” or sometimes one finds instead the similar term jūshin gyakko (銃身逆行) or “gun barrel reversing movement”. And so also such terms as jūshu dome (銃床止) “gun stock stopper” or jūshin dome (銃身止) “gun barrel stopper” just for example.

Tori dashes in (over the right foot), and stops uke's drawing of the sword, by putting in a left hammerfist strike tettsui-uchi to uke's right arm killing Unjun (Ude Nare) vital point at the outer forearm. Tori takes hold of the sword hilt in his right hand, turns the sword a bit (to align the blade) and draws it across uke's face, at the same time performs ashi gari killing ganke vital point at the calf muscle with the heel kick in. Tori steals uke's short sword from its sheath with his right hand and raises the point to threaten and submit uke. Techniques like this take advantage of the wrong distance at which uke tried to draw and employ his longsword, presenting the opportunity to steal the short sword from him.

潮返   Shio Gaeshi       Tide Counter

Tori releases his right hand grip and strikes yubiken-zuki thumbfist strike killing suigetsu vital point at the pit of stomach. Shoots that hand up around uke's neck after performing soto gari leg reaping kick around or from behind between the legs with the right foot killing ganke vital point at the calf muscle, and stepping through with that foot behind uke's leg as far as comfortably possible past uke, firm grip on the wrist of the sword hand with tori's left hand, turns and drops to one knee felling uke. As uke has fallen, tori then grabs and tosses the longsword, throwing it away and with the other hand draws uke's short sword to hold him at bay (usually while kneeling or stepping on one of uke's arm.) Techniques like this take advantage of the wrong distance at which uke tried to draw and employ his longsword, presenting the opportunity to steal the short sword from him.

Tori releases the grip on the hilt of uke's longsword, and the draw of the stolen kodachi shortsword complete he places the right hand on the spine of the blade bracing the short sword and holding the tip just under uke's jaw to submit him. It is called “releasing four hands” because both men have their hands on uke's longsword during the draw.
