GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT OF AFFILIATION

The initial reason that I had to write this page was in response to a very small number of inquiries from an unreasonably disgruntled student or two who comes from some of the schools that used to belong to the old original American Federation of Jujutsu. Please understand that there are no complaints in the statements made on this page against anyone or anything (literally none at all). Please understand that any such inquiry will be answered the same as you find written here (no need to write me about it.) Having said that...

SCHOOLS, TRAINING GROUPS AND ORGANISATIONS
FROM THE OLD AMERICAN FEDERATION OF JUJUTSU

There are some number of schools, training groups and organisations that exist today whom were members of the old original American Federation of Jujutsu. A good number of these are known to include this statement (in some form) on their Website or in the documents of their school: "Shihan Weymouth, Master Ellis and Master Moore, all who hold various Yudansha ranks and have different backgrounds in various other styles of Jujitsu and Judo..." I am, of course, the "Shihan Weymouth" referred to... I would assume you know that? It is not unusual that many of these men and their Assistant Instructors do not personally know me and never really have any correspondence with me, since we live on separate sides of North America. Under the rules and practices of the old original American Federation of Jujutsu, any and all instructors were given general permission to post references like this to demonstrate affiliation.
It is most certainly not improper for any such party, school or organisation to name me in this fashion or to claim direct affiliation with the Library Collection of Shihan Weymouth, based upon it. Please understand that, in some few cases, there may even be some that identify me as one of the organisational Headmasters (or "Chief instructors") over their school. They are not mis-stating or practicing any form of deception to do any of this: Please do not insult them or their organisation over this matter.

Some schools have since come into existence that are descended out of the old schools of the American Federation of Jujutsu or sibling Institutions that occurred at the same time. These schools were never members of the AFJ and might not have been direct members of any of the sibling organisations, but did descend out of it all just the same. If and where such persons and groupings claim similar direct affiliation, they are not exaggerating in the least. They might not
personally know me and never really have any correspondence with me, since we live on separate sides of North America. Please do not insult them or their organisation over this matter

Really, one thinks that the reasonable privilege of such AFJ associative parties and groups is rather obvious, given that the entire Collection and every item in it was dedicated "for the Interests of the American Federation of Jujutsu". As for the complaints that came from non-associative parties about their usage of my name and materials... you've gotta be kidding me, right?! Go away.

THOSE WHOM CONTRIBUTE MATERIALS TO THE COLLECTION

This was stated here in response to inquiries about the privilege of contributors to make use of my name and materials from the Library Collection of Shihan Weymouth. Please understand that any such inquiry will be answered the same as you find written here (no need to write me about it.) Those whom have made even the least contribution to the Collection have a fully reasonable privilege to make some usage of my name and refer to me. When I process the pieces contributed there is a certain volume of email correspondence back and forth as needed to clarify certain matters. If the contributor wishes to speak of me and materials I have produced... that is very reasonable. They are not presuming me in the least. Please do not insult them or their organisation over this matter.
As for the inquiries about Differences of Opinion in Modes of Translation: There is the matter of some difference of opinion over "Modes of Translation" that should be used. I do not find that offensive, or even the least bit surprising. You see, in the Martial  arts industry, there are "Modes of Translation" that are quite a bit "martial artsy" to say the least. Some people have a firm conviction that, in the context of the Martial arts, things have a different definition than in normal ranges of the traditional language. Personally, I don't make much usage of these "Modes of Translation" because they usually originated with the Western Practitioners and not so much the Japanese. The average example of this Mode of translation would require one to ignore the Standard Definitions and use definitions that are not reflected in the language records for Sino-Japanese. Personally, I think that if you are going to use those Modes of Translation... your best bet is to combine the actual language value with the "martial artsy" rendering. That way you did render a reasonable and literal translation just the same (best of both worlds). BUT NOT EVERYONE FEELS THAT WAY. When someone and their organisation has contributed materials, they certainly have some right to speak of me and make what usage of my translation works they deem appropriate, even if they have a difference of opinion about how things should have been translated. Please do not insult them or their organisation over this matter.

THOSE WHOM TRANSLATE ANY OF THE MATERIALS IN MY COLLECTION
TO ANOTHER LANGUAGE OTHER THAN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This was stated here in response to inquiries about the right(s) of other parties to translate items from the Library Collection of Shihan Weymouth into languages other than English and to make use of such translations, and to make reasonable usage of my name in relationship to such materials produced.  This is quite appropriate for them to do so, when and where they show the general ability to do so by having produced such translations into any other language. In some cases, there may be a substantial fee charged by these Translators for the works they produced. This would be quite understandable, they went through all the trouble of making the translations into your language (quite often they cannot do so for free, especially when producing hard copy editions.) I did not make the translation to your language, they did!!
>>  The fact that they cannot readily translate the Japanese language is quite irrelevant. They can translate the English language, and that is precisely what they have done.
>>  Please do not insult them or their organisation over these matters.

Persons and organisations doing so should avoid changing my Translations and the Translator's Notes. (1) If you change the translation, a Note should be made, perhaps on an Appendix page at the end of the text that lists the Page number and states (in the language you translated it to) what my translation originally reads. That way, your readers and buyers have the benefit of both Modes of translation. Mine and yours together. (2) Please avoid removing my name, since this may cause instances of unnecessary embarrassment when accusations are made that you have scalped my Translation and failed to acknowledge that it came from me. (3) DO NOT change the transcription!!!! There is a very large percentile of my translations were made based upon Transcriptions that were made by the Japanese themselves.
>>  There is a right way and wrong way to do a thing, the respectful professional  way and that is what should be done.
>>  But even when a translation to your language was made the wrong way, a translation that you can read is better than none, if you cannot easily read the English language!!

Obviously, translators and organisations involved in translation of my works to your language are going to make some use of my name. How could it happen any other way? The fact that some of them cannot actually translate the archaic forms of the Sino-Japanese language is not very relevant (they are taking the English translation and reworking that into your language for you!) Of course ths means there is some minor Affiliation, to say the least!

OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES WHOM WISH
TO BE AFFILIATED TO THE COLLECTION

This could be done in any number of fashions, naturally. And it strikes me that if a man (or woman) has been collecting, reading and making use of my Translation works for some reasonable length of time (perhaps in the pursuit of their own choice of schools or arts) it would be reasonable that they may make some use of my name (how could it occur otherwise, anyways?) But if this thought crosses your mind and you seek Direct Affiliation, please remember, I handle a fairly large volume of translation work and do not have that much time for idle banter. I would sugguest being rather straight forward about what you are trying to accomplish.

One or two people reported to me that a small Seminar was held that allegedly included me as a Guest speaker or Guest instructor (they caught on quickly that it was not me at all.) About subject matter like this, please don't do that. Join one of the surviving Organisations (sibling to the AFJ) that accepts public membership and then CLAIM to be directly associated to us. That way you are not lying to anyone (it goes much better, you know?) READ THIS PART CAREFULLY: My own school is semi Private ("application unwelcome") and I never host or attend upon seminars and meets. If I did change this rule, there would be a listing page on this website to indicate dates and locations.
>>  Anyone making a mistake like this will probably be spotted rather quickly (I don't do seminars, as a general rule.)
