You must be a member of the AFJ in order to enjoy AFJ Associate Certification. There is no absolute requirement to engage in Associate Certifications through the AFJ, see the accompanying documents for more information on the subject. Associate Certification exists and can be tailor fit to a number of configurations to meet your needs as a member. Associate Certification was meant as an alternative to some of the other services  but it can be tailored to accentuate or reinforce some of the other services, just as well. As an important example, Associate Certification exists as an alternative to the services of Retainership. Where the terms of Retainership would be seen as unsuitable for the member and their interests, one could instead engage in Associate Certification(s) of one form or another as might be more suitable than Retainership itself. The terms of Retainership are temporary and must be reinitiated every three years, whereas Associate Certification does not require reinitiation at all. There are other possible applications for the Associate Certifications, the issue of Retainership is only one example of its possible usage. 
Several different possibilities exist as to what can be done through Associate Certifications, such as when it is used in relationship to the AFJ Chartered Private Instructor, or the Chartering of a school or group. Associate Certifications are not a fixed system, it can be tailor fit to several different subjects as per the needs and interests of the membership. Associate Certifications can be engaged in without regard to rank or station.

Depending on what arragnements may have been made in the course of maintaing the Associate Certifications, there may be a small number of other nominal fees charged (sometimes there are none, depending).  The cost of any additional fees is very low. There is no reqiurement to engage in any of these additional services (one could maintain the Associate Certification(s) under the simplest of arrangements.)
