This
page offers the application and other documents related to
AFJ
RETAINERSHIP through the American Federation of
Jujutsu.
You must be a member of the AFJ in order to Retain the Shihan. There is no requirement to Retain the Shihan, see the accompanying documents for more information. Retainership is done on a three year basis, and must be reinitiated every three years to remain active.
Depending
on what arragnements may have been made in the course of the
Retainership, there may be other nominal fees charged (such as for
permission to apply the Shihan's Electronic Signature to certificates
and documents issued by you under the described terms) and etc. The
cost of all additional fees is very low. There is no reqiurement to
engage in any of these additional services (one could maintain the
Shihan in the Retainsership under the simple arrangement).

An example of the Retainership Certifcate of the American Federation of Jujutsu
An
example of the Retainership Certifcate of the American Federation of
Jujutsu that will be recieved as proof of the Retainership (date of
termination clearly indicated on the certificate.) PLEASE NOTICE:
The AFJ policies on Privacy and Confidentiality do not allow us, or the
Shihan, to reveal the names of people and parties or organisations that
have engaged in Retaining the Shihan (that would require special
written permission from you, per incident. A minor filing fee of $5
would be required, since we have to enter the written permissions into
record, of course.)
The Shihan can only be retained by members of the AFJ. The Shihan can be retained by private individuals (irregardless of rank or station), or by group parties (the group has to have a name, or be given a group name.)
Likewise, the Shihan can be retained by organisations under the same
terms and for the same cost. Those who wish to offer their own services
as an AFJ Retainer themselves must Retain the Shihan first
and then offer their services as a retainer themselves (there are
definitive rules about doing this when and where Ranking will be
awarded. Rank cannot be awarded by anyone under 3rd Dan Blackbelt. The
prospective should apply for AFJ Certified Instructor as well, in
addition to the Retainership.) This would allow you to attach the
Shihan's Electronic Signature to certificates and documents issued by
you as a Retainer or Retained Instructor. THERE ARE MINOR FEES to gain permission for this sort of thing.)
When
rank is not to be issued, the same rules still apply: before offering
your services as an AFJ Retainer, you must first Retain the Shihan
yourself. There are several different reasons why one might engage in
doing this, the Retainership Agreement will outline the details according to what you yourself describe at the time. Necessary alterations in the text of this agreement may require a $-5-10 Filing fee, of course.
This is a simplified explanation of the rules for AFJ Retainership.
